Founding the Mechanical Engineering Club: A Journey of Innovation and Leadership
Overview
Transforming a small, under-resourced Marble Run club into the thriving Mechanical Engineering Club (MEC) stands as one of my most significant leadership achievements in high school. In just over a year, I grew MEC from an idea into a recognized school institution with 20+ members, a substantial budget, and a legacy of innovative projects. This journey encapsulates my passion for engineering, problem-solving, and community building.
The Genesis: Identifying a Need
Grade 10 - The Spark
As a Grade 10 student passionate about hands-on engineering, I found limited STEM opportunities beyond two small clubs: Robotics and Marble Run. Joining the latter, I quickly recognized untapped potential. Despite limited resources and infrequent meetings, my growing involvement revealed a clear opportunity: students needed a proper platform to explore mechanical engineering.
Teacher Transition: A Critical Moment
When the supervising teacher announced his departure, I faced a pivotal choice: let the club dissolve or build something greater. I chose the latter, initiating conversations with school administration to preserve and expand upon what we had started.
Building from the Ground Up
Strategic Rebranding and Recruitment
- Vision Expansion: Proposed and successfully negotiated a name change from “Marble Run Club” to “Mechanical Engineering Club” to reflect broader ambitions
- Marketing Initiative: Designed recruitment materials (posters, presentation slides) that attracted 20+ members during Club Week
- Infrastructure Development: Established dual weekly meeting schedule with dedicated teacher supervision
Creating Systems for Success
I implemented foundational systems to ensure operational excellence:
System | Purpose | Outcome |
---|---|---|
Resource Documentation | Centralized knowledge base for projects | Enabled skill development and idea sharing |
Attendance Tracking | Monitor engagement and participation | Data-driven club management |
Meeting Protocols | Structured agenda and orientation process | Professional, welcoming environment |
Key Projects and Technical Growth
Mechatronics Breakthrough
Collaborated with a programming-savvy peer to create an automated robot turret, marking my introduction to:
- Arduino microcontroller programming
- Integration of mechanical and electronic systems
- Interdisciplinary project management

Crossbow Project
Mentored a team of Grade 9 students through designing and building a functional crossbow, fostering:
- Independent project management skills
- Blueprint development and precision construction
- Peer-to-peer knowledge transfer

Mega Marble Run Initiative
Spearheaded a large-scale collaborative project to:
- Boost club morale through shared accomplishment
- Demonstrate engineering capabilities to the school community
- Create a showcase piece for recruitment

Club Events Highlights
MEC Bridge collaboration
This special event marked an exciting partnership between the Mechanical Engineering Club and the school’s Bridge Club. We welcomed primary school students to our newly acquired STEM room, giving them a firsthand look at engineering in action. The collaboration featured interactive demonstrations of our projects, including the automated robot turret and various mechanical creations. We organized a hands-on bridge-building challenge where young students designed and constructed bridges using popsicle sticks and glue, with MEC members providing guidance on structural principles. This event successfully inspired younger students while strengthening interdisciplinary connections within our school community.

MEC Sci-Pi Week
During this school-wide STEM celebration, the Mechanical Engineering Club took center stage with interactive demonstrations and project showcases. We designed engaging activities that made mechanical engineering principles accessible to students across all grade levels. Club members presented working models of their projects, explaining the underlying physics and engineering concepts in approachable terms. The event served as both an educational opportunity for the wider school community and a successful recruitment tool, generating increased interest in mechanical engineering among students who might not have previously considered joining technical clubs.

MEC open morning
The Open Morning event represented a significant milestone for MEC, marking our first official school-wide showcase. We carefully selected and prepared our most impressive projects for display, including the crossbow, automated turret, and ongoing marble run constructions. The event attracted steady streams of visiting parents and prospective students, allowing us to demonstrate the club’s technical capabilities and educational value. This visibility proved instrumental in building institutional support, leading to increased recognition from school administration and paving the way for future resource allocations and collaborative opportunities.

Overcoming Operational Challenges
Securing Resources
After initial rejections, I persistently advocated for club resources, resulting in:
- Budget Approval: Secured HKD $7,200 annual funding
- 3D Printer Access: Gained permission to use school equipment
- Dedicated Space: Transitioned club operations to a specialized STEM room
Leadership Adaptation
When attendance declined before Chinese New Year, I:
- Rebalanced personal project involvement with leadership duties
- Implemented flexible meeting structures
- Delegated responsibilities to engaged members
Impact and Recognition
School-Wide Visibility
- Open Morning Exhibition: Showcased club projects to prospective families
- Club Fair Participation: Produced promotional video and interactive booth
- Primary School Collaboration: Partnered with Bridge Club to inspire younger students
Legacy Establishment
The MEC now stands as a permanent fixture in our school’s STEM ecosystem, providing:
- Continuous project-based learning opportunities
- Inter-grade mentorship and collaboration
- Foundation for advanced engineering exploration
Leadership Reflections
This experience taught me invaluable lessons about:
- Visionary Planning: Transforming abstract ideas into executable plans
- Persistent Advocacy: Navigating administrative systems to secure resources
- Adaptive Management: Balancing member interests with organizational goals
- Collaborative Innovation: Leveraging diverse skills for complex projects
The Mechanical Engineering Club represents more than just technical skill development—it demonstrates how passion, when combined with strategic leadership, can create lasting educational value for an entire community.
